Why reuse bags? You really need to ask? O.k. Here’s the answer… because we use around 13 billion plastic bags in this country alone every year. These take up to 1,000 years to degrade and landfill sites are running out of space!
*Plastic bags cause over 100,000 sea turtle and other marine animal deaths every year when animals mistake them for food.
*The manufacture of plastic bags add tonnes of carbon emissions into the air annually.
*Between 500 billion and 1 trillion plastic bags are used worldwide each year.
*Approximately 60 to 100 million barrels of oil are required to make the world’s plastic bags every year. China uses 3 billion plastic bags every day !
*Plastic bags don’t biodegrade, they photodegrade – breaking down into smaller and smaller toxic bits, contaminating soil and waterways and entering the food chain when animals accidentally ingest them.
*plastic bags are among the 12 items of debris most often found in coastal cleanups, according to the nonprofit centre for Marine conservation.
*Plastic bags in drains were identified as major factors in the severe flooding in Bangladesh in 1998 and 1998.
Next time you go shopping, take a BAGGEE and hold your head up high as you reuse your bags. O.k. so you’re not tying yourself to a tree about to be cut down in the Rainforest, but be proud! – You’re still doing your bit for the environment!
